i/p over mains stops working

For the last four years I've used a pair of Solwise 'Homeplug Turbo



85Mbps' i/p over mains units to connect my office (brick outbuilding) to my house for internet access. Although only a 'temporary' measure before I got round to laying a duct for cables it worked very well. The other day it stopped totally. The same pair of Homeplugs will work happily talking to each other within the house or within the office. I've tried another pair of Homeplugs that I have with no change of symptoms.

As far as I can tell nothing has changed in the wiring, no new things plugged in that might cause interferance, no changes to mcbs rcds etc so I'm rather stumped why it should suddenly stop.



The office has it's own consumer unit powered by a sub-main that branches off before the house consumer unit, so when it was working the signals were passing through the house and office consumer units, but it did work. I suppose it is possible that there is something interfering that is external to my premises. Any suggestions?



I do now have the ducts in place so I'm going to have to get round to pulling some cat5, it's a tad complex in that the duct goes between several outbuildings so there are four 'legs' between office and house!

Have got any motor inverters running now that you did not have earlier? I run homeplug down to my wood workshop at the bottom of my garden and it is just about limit range. Switching on an inverter on the bandsaw kills it reliably. hth

No Bob, no inverters running. I reckon EDF are polluting it with French electrickery

If it was borderline then a neighbour on the same supply phase may have pushed it over the edge.

There has been talk in the radio ham fraternity that due to the inaction of Ofcom in banning these terribly RF polluting devices, they have designed a device that can be plugged in that sends out interference that has been very successful in getting folk to either use proper wireless or cabled devices. I#'m not saying this is so in your case, but these devices are a slippery slope toward no ability to get any analogue radio to operate withing a quarter mile of said devices. There are politics involved of course hence the soft pedalling by Ofcom. mains wiring is leaking and has a lot of attenuation so the actual levels needed is quite high, much higher and wider band than, say a mains operated intercom or baby alarm would be.

They should be banned outright, but BT who use them most, have a powerful lobby.

Yes one good way to kill them, and very ironic, is a photovoltaic cell aray with associated inverter to feed stuff back into the mains. Sadly these too create interference due to the leaky nature of the mains, however they can be suppressed as the signal you are stopping is not a wanted one. Brian
