How old are your apprentices?

I'm assuming it;s theri physical age :)

Even at uni when we apparently get the best their maths skills are pretty bad. So extra math courses are run. As I've said I once asked a 2nd year studetn what 1X6 was and he went to his bag to get the calculator out. Things are better now as we have smartphones and watches to use as brains.

Yep. I was 17 when I started but I'd already been at college for a year. Quite a few start at 16.

In my first year at college, I had to do 'Functional Skills' Maths, English and ICT. These were meant to be for those who failed their GCSEs but everyone had to do them; if you did well you could be fast tracked. I don't recall them being anywhere near as hard as GCSEs - it was all very simple stuff like converting the time from analogue to digital format...

There is no link between intelligence, education and common sense. Common sense trumps all.

Spotted Kermode on the idiot's lantern the other day and was shocked. Hasn't aged well, has he? Jabba the Hutt came to mind.
