Hotpoint Dryer Recall

I read about the recall for these items recently, so I went onto the Hotpoint website to find out more. I was armed with my data sheet with model and serial numbers. The website gave no information on this problem, but offered several telephone numbers for Service calls. Those which were 03.... numbers were never answered, and the others were 0845, ie charging numbers, which I didn't see any reason to use. I filled in the Contact Form on the website, and in the intervening fortnight, I have heard nothing. So I just searched again, and found

formatting link
which at least offered a form to fill in and enter the details of my machine.

Now my wife appreciates why I always turned off the dryer if we were leaving the house while it was running, I had a boss in the US who lost his house because his dryer caught fire in the way this recall is due to prevent.

A couple of years ago, there was a recall for some Hotpoint dishwashers, one of which I have in the house. The recall work was done speedily and competently, by a local contractor. Hopefully, this one will be the same.

Indeed, my son had a tumble drier (don't know what make) and last year he left the machine running while he went out to walk the dog. 1/2 a mile away he had a call on his mobile phone from his home smoke alarm(!!) and rushed back to the house to find it full of smoke. Fluff around the back of the drier was smouldering. He grabbed some heavy duty gloves, unplugged it and just dragged it out into the front garden. Very lucky there was no fire, his wife was in hospital at the time giving birth to their first child.

He lives in Luton - needless to say the drier was gone by the next morning - pikeys.

I wouldn't even consider leaving a dryer/dishwasher/WM running unattended - different generation I guess :)

Dishwasher, dryer, washing machine etc all run at night in our house (or when we're out). Don't even unplug the TV at night.

Of course we do unplug the fridge at night. We're not daft!

They do cause a number of fires, according to figures that were in the media earlier in the year, about 1500 house fires per year are caused by faulty or badly maintained or misused DW. WM and TD (about 40,000 dwelling fires per year).

Ok, that's a fairly low percentage, but most fires are caused by human error. Of the approx 4000 fires/year caused by faulty etc. appliances it's by far the biggest proportion.

So not using them at night or when out is not an unreasonable thing to do.

Oh there's undoubtably a logic to it, just as there's a logic to never getting in your car. A life spent in fear of possible remote consequences is a life diminished.

Drivel. How about lives ended? Apart from fridges & freezers everything in my house is off when were out/in bed. Especially the junk electronics we get these days.

This is not the only problem with this machine. When ours was just over two years old we had problems with the float switch float which is only a bit of polystyrenes which seemed desolve and become distorted and contaminated so it did not work , the part cost seven pounds and you also needed a cocktail stick lick component that cost another seven pounds this is bad design and shouldn't happen on a relatively new machine.fortunately I could do it myself a Repair company could have cost a hundred. Just bad design has any one else had this problem
