Just wondered if anyone could let me know how to remove the front cove from a ST1000?

It's clipped on IIRC. Look for the retaining lugs underneath it.
yes,just push them in gently with a little straight bladed screwdriver and ease the front off towards you,mind you dont snap the lugs..
