Help-Can't access Newsgroups on eternal september

Mar 19, 2025 Last reply: 1 year ago 18 Replies

Having changed my computer to a new model I am having problems accessing newsgroups on eternal-september.

I have entered all account details as on my previous pc and I do get a list of e-s related groups some of which I can read messages on but no list of general newsgroups.

I am getting a message saying Could not connect to eternal september, access denied.

I am logged in and have Request Authentication box checked.

Any helpful ideas?

With the "always auth" box ticked, you've avoided the usual TB vs ES pitfall.

ES isn't my main server, but I have an account there and it's ok right now.

I seem to remember Ray replied to a couple of users, saying the prcess that deletes unused accounts had been overzealous and had deleted some it shouldn't have?

check the ES website to see if you still have an account, and re-create if necessary ...

What are you using as your news reader? Have you got it set up correctly? I use News Tap and in the column headed groups pressing the + sign in the header brings up an almost infinite list of groups

Thanks for your responses, I've managed to sort it now but I don't know how I did it!

I cannot understand why anyone uses ES instead of investing 10 Euro a year in News.Individual.NET which never seems to have the same problems.

[Account-based]

news.mixmin.net Port 563 [Usually broken, insufficient disk storage (on purpose) ]

And there are a few others.

I have always been happy to pay the 10 euros but this year I find that paying by paypal' as a guest, my credit and debit cards are rejected (paypal or my bank I don't know) and the bank transfer details are not accepted by my online banking.

I may need to try ES shortly

Because the money trail can be followed.

So what? This is the University of Berlin, which I am sure is reputable, and no drugs are involved.

So why waste it on newsgroups? (For me, it's more a displacement activity than anything else.)

I see a material difference between 'wasting' my time having informative discussions and wasting my time sorting out an unreliable Usenet provider.

I am new to ES having been using it for more than 3 but less than 4 decades, and have not yet experienced a problem. €300 is €300.

Some people are so tight even Plus Gas wouldn’t work on them.

GH

I can remember when Individual.net was free.
