I recently bought an electric gizmo to make my own from oranges. It requires five big oranges to yield a large and a medium glass (Senior Management prefers a medium glass). A bit of a faff for every morning but a nice treat.

Tesco has been here for 20 years, they added self checkout a couple of years ago. A large, new Lidl opened next door to them last year, no self checkouts there, so probably not a national policy.

The only other self checkouts around here which I am aware of, are in ASDA's massive store and another massive Tesco, several miles away.

Around here, ASDA, Tesco, Sainsburys and Marks and Spencers all have self-service tills. Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl don't. Near work, even the small Spar has self-service!

Very rarely queue in our Sainburys - click and go. Handle the goods once instead of 3 times.

I always make a point of not using the self service checkouts, I'd rather pay for the people to do it for me rather than pay more to DIY it. See keeping on DIY topic. :-)

Yes pay more as I don't thieve, apparntly 1 in 5 do and it's increasing sometimes difficult,to detect but few buy 5kg of carrots but they can fill a bag with tins of red salmon and weigh it and call it carrots, so the supermarkets will have to put up prices to cover costs of not having staff on tills.

It happend in my local co-op, I was in the service queue someone went to the self service with a box of 6 cans of beer, he went towards the checkouts and then made a run for the exit, they couldn;t catch him because of the queues in the isle for paying and as there were only a couple of staff there he got away. Perhaps they caught him on CCTV but this all ads up £££££ I doubt the police would be very interested in someone stealing 6 cans of beer and even if they did the cost of it would be far more.

What has that got to do with it he stole £16.40 worth, the sweets only came to £2.50 so why focus on just the sweets ?

and for every one caught how amny get away, that is the true cost.
