Generally in good condition apart from a corner beneath an apple tree where the acid in the fruit has got to the zinc.
Would like to prevent further deterioration? paint? What kind of paint?

A nice gloopy bitumastic paint should do the trick.
Bitumen if you want black, household gloss or any metal paint. Or anything else that's waterproof. Bitumen is best sand sprinkled to reduce summer temps a bit.

I had a similar problem last year. Having wire-brushed I painted with "Hammerite Special Metals Primer" followed by "Hammerite smooth" - it's early days but it still looks good.
I was going to say, from my experience the inside temp of anything painted black can be a lot hotter than it was when it was a kind of galvanised colour! And attempting to put a lighter colour over it seems to make no difference either! Brian

Why not try a cold galvanising paint, such as

but remove the rust first!
spraying would increase the cost, hassle & mess. But yes to zinc, it's as good a rust preventer as you'll get.
