Very nice. I might have been tempted to add the wire after refitting the new connector.

It's a pain that Raspberry Pis are in such short supply. However there are a number of alternatives.

In many cases you can do it after, but I tend find it easier to do it before replacing the component since you have a bit more space to work.

(Placing the wire under the component also lets you get at things like missing pads on a BGA device).

I think there are some pi zero wifi board available now...

As one who has a passing interest in the Raspberry Pi, but has never bought one, what is the reason for the lack of supply? No more Pis around, too few spare parts, something else? Just wondering.

Just to confirm, I have found a Pi 2 model B v1.1 with 1GB ram with a clear transparent plastic case and carboard box

4 USB ports, 1 full size HDMO port, 1 ethernet port and a microUSB port for a smartphone style PSU.

This will be going on eBay unless someone on here would like to make me an offer?

I dont need one urgently enough to beg, and you will get a good price on ebay.

And I am wondering if there is some underhand skull-duggery going on to allow all these competitors to get a foothold by starving the RPi production of components.

There seem to be a host of Orange Pi, Banana-pi, Chocolate-pi look-alikes, plus the Risc-V consortium.

Not really. The Pis use custom silicon and, because of the price point, they're last in the queue as the supply chain tightens - car manufacturers who need chips to stop their $50,000 vehicles getting held up in production are willing to splash the cash, whereas a computer sold for $35 has basically no headroom to get themselves further up the queue.

The clones are using existing silicon, mostly Chinese, designed for products like tablets and smart TVs. They sell in vastly more volume than the Pis do, so their silicon vendors can muscle themselves up the queue. It is notable those boards are often substantially more expensive. (and the software support is typically awful)

At present nobody makes a RISC-V chip that is a good enough competitor for the Pi (in terms of both performance and price point).

Thanks for the link. Can't see a date & don't know how often the information is updated but for the UK ones I checked as showing in stock were out of stock.

Lots of small appliances now are computers. Routers, printers, lots more. Are any repurposable?

Many routers can have third party firmware like OpenWRT installed. Some Android phones can have a custom ROM like LineageOS installed.

But they don't hit quite the same spot as the Pi does - a router has often limited RAM and can't drive a monitor; a phone doesn't have GPIOs.

So it depends what you want to do with it, and whether some other appliance fits the bill.
