Flushing out a radiator

Hello all,

I have problems with two downstairs radiators, both are cold although the pipes leading to them are warm. I guess they both need flushing out. The other radiators on the ground floor are warm.

Can someone please advise how to do this, the radiators have been in for around 15 years and are the older style without fins in the middle.

Regards....Mike

Crewood brought next idea :

Close the valves at each side, then check by opening the bleed valve that the valves have managed to seal. Then take the radiator outside and give it a good flush out both ways until it runs clear.

You can I believe also get heating system flushing solutions which you add to the entire system.

Have they ever worked properly? If so, have you adjusted the valves on any other radiators between then and now? Are the troublesome rads getting hot at all (at top or bottom)? It's unusual for a rad to be so blocked it doesn't heat up at all, but if other rads are connected so that the path through them is much lower resistance than the ones which aren't heating up, then all the hot water will go through them instead: to fix this you need to trun down the valve(s) on whichever other rad(s) is/are 'stealing' the flow until the flow is balanced between the rads (see diyfaq.org.uk)

Hello all,

Thanks for the replies.

John, the radiators have worked OK before, the "not warming up" on the two radiators has been a recent and gradual process. Nothing has been touched on the system to make any changes.

Did they start to go cold at the top while still being hot at the bottom? If so then the rad needs bleeding.

If they were hot at the top and cold at the bottom then it's likely to be full of sludge and need flushing out.
