Flue Longevity Update - Worcester Bosch Success Story

Hi all

Regular users might just remember a moan from me 16-06-2014 regarding a disintegrating boiler flue. Essentially, the exposed inner 80mm core pipe of my Greenstar condensing boiler flue terminal has disintegrated. The failure suggests that the material used was not UV stable

The flue is a reasonable length with various components, with both the boiler and flue being installed in 2006.

A fairly pointed email concerning the life span of this product resulted in their offering to replace the defective flue. As all parts have changed since the installation, this amounted to 12 items with a combined price of £819 (based on Direct Heating web site inc. VAT).

Granted I've ended up paying the fitting charge ~£200, but I would still class this as a result and a positive customer service experience. Far better for parts to be designed with realistic service life of course.

One of the problems nowadays is that the commercial life of things is so short nobody has time to even do extended life test on materials, or I suspect is always sure their subcontractor has not used an inferior material to cut costs later in production. I mean back in the 1970s there were a number of TVs that caught fire merely due to a sub contractor using a flammable plastic component instead of the specified non flammable one. It was a housing of a focus control, and under certain conditions this would burn up harmlessly and partially melting its housing, except that in the faulty ones it caught fire instead.

People do make mistakes and cut corners. Brian
