Given that ECS is the political wing of NICIEC you need to allow for a certain amount of self interest agenda pushing here...
The death rate quoted here is typically double those reported by government sources for *all* electrical deaths (not just those in the home). The discrepancy is itself a cause for concern. However, even taking the inflated figure it shows that in the grand scheme of things the death rate is very low when compared to other accidental deaths. (>
300 / month on the road, and probably double that in the hands of the medical profession)Again seems to disagree with fire brigade figures.
"More than half (51 per cent) of accidental fires in homes arose from cooking. Other common sources of ignition were: electrical appliances (12 per cent), electrical distribution (10 per cent), smokers' materials (7 per cent), and space heating appliances (4 per cent)."
I have no problem with their basic message (RCDs are good, socket covers pointless etc). I doubt some of their numbers however.
They do highlight that the _death_ rate *is* insignificant (even allowing for the figures being double the those reported by official government sources). However its far too easy to get sidetracked by deaths when these are the exception rather than the rule in electrical accidents.

A very low number.
WTF is a leisure electrocution? I doubt it has anything to do with socket covers so cannot be used to support your argument. Probably dodgy caravan extension leads and wet grass, etc.
Which I am certain are entirely due to adult bahaviour (e.g., overloading circuits) and again say nothing in support of your argument about socket covers.
By all means, campaign for better electrical safety and education, but at least try and form a sensible argument.

I see google groups is redefining low standards yet again, it can't even quote angle brackets properly now ...
And that page makes the quote "RCDs cut the electrical current if there is an unusual surge and offer better protection than normal fuses and circuit breakers, the ESC said."
What is an unusual surge?
nearby lightning strike can trip mine
