Failed freezer insulation?

One of my (upright, 17 y/o) freezers has started condensing water onto it's top surface (thereby destroying the two boxes of clay pigeons on top of it - grrr). I've defrosted it this afternoon and it now seems OK, but could it be that the insulation has failed? (This happened once before on a tiny chest freezer we had).

If it has, is it repairable? The freezer works fine in all other respects.

Spray expanding foam in a can into any void in the top under the lid like the stuff used in filling cavities in walls etc

Maybe. But your boxes are insulating to some extent, thereby lowering the surface temp, and this may be all that's causing the prob. So maybe it'll be fine with no boxes on it.

if it turns out the insulation is saturated and thus not insulating, then yes in principle, just a case of removing the insulation and replacing.

good way to get a bulging split top.

Well, it's still OK now, some 6 hours later, although the compressor now sounds a little ragged, presumably because it's been running most of the afternoon...

Sounds good - if the insulation had gone it would never have dried off.
