I need to make three short front breast bars for a horse trailer. I made a single full width one once out of 2-3/8 by 1/8 steel tube, but I suspect that something like aluminium scaffolding tube will be fine for these (they will be less than 2 feet long). I'm looking for smart ways to make the end fittings. Richardsons have a U fitting like a hook at one end and a 90 degree pin at the other, held with a lynch pin (so when you release one end the bar hangs vertically from the other). I could probably get three of these and shorten them, but I was looking for a cheaper option.



They will be engaging with eye bolts. If I go for steel, I can forge (a bit) and silver solder, but is there anything ready-made which I might be able to adapt?

Why not take a look on ebay for the real thing or tour an appropriate scrapyard. I-W trailers have a simple design for their bars which should be simple enough to fabricate if you can't find the real thing at an appropriate price

Kee Klamp structural fittings might suit. They do a *swivel flange* which might adapt to your eye bolt or you could use the complete item. Size 8 suits BS 1387 steel pipe (48.3mm dia.)

It's not a standard trailer; it's a Ward treble but only has a single front bar. So I need to fit the fixings, then get three bars exactly the right length.

Hm, my reply seems to have disappeared.

But I did say thanks to all, that looks like an excellent lead. Thinking about using the double swivel.
