Extract fan, electronics help.

Fan has stopped working. I have checked mains input (1) and thats ok Power at output to fan (2) appears ok. Disconnected fan /motor (3) and connected briefly to mains and that runs ok.



So issue appears to be between input and output. Likely cause and how to check, I have multimeter but only ever use for mains.

That is a switched fan timer. It wont start unless switched live is connected to live and will run on after switched live is disconnected, for a time you can set on the preset pot control in the picture.

If it still doesn't start you have a broken electronics circuit. Replace the chip and or output triac.

Showing my lack of knowledge here. When installed it has live & switch connected. Now it is uninstalled do I still have to also connect to switch? Do I loop a wire from Live to Switch?

yes, via a switch preferably, if you want it to work as intended with a delay

Yup, the fan all the time the switched input is held live.

The permanent live in the third terminal of the input connector allows it to "run on" after the switch is turned off. The amount of time being set by the potentiometer on the left.

Yup - or just move your input live wire to the switched terminal form the point fo view of testing.

Ok cleaned up all the debris, connected the switch/live and it works....except the timer doesnt. Checked the wiring and it is all in correct place and tight.

I will fiddle with the timer dial tomorrow if it doesnt sort the overun then will leave as is, at least I have a working fan for now.

The middle pin on the left, marked 'switched 2' acts as a trigger needs to be made live before the fan will run. It will then continue to run until it times out. The 'permanent live 3' needs a live which is always on/ unswitched.

I agree, if this was the original wiring it could only work if the PCB contains a humidity sensor rather than a timer. Is the object in an outside facing housing in the case just next to the terminals a candidate?

Ok, we were both wrong. The picture is clearly of a bench testing connection and it originally had switched and permanent live. Probably a capacitor in the timer failed.

Harry, in situ the fan has been working for the last 2 years , the image is on a bench when it failed, I have since connected (on bench) to a live & switched and it has started to work again although the overun timer still doesnt.

That will possibly the second capacitor in BigClives video - the one he didn't change.

I do like watching bigClives videos although have to admit I understand very little of the technical stuff, its a foreign language to me :-)

It's interesting you mention that as I've found that whilst many people can be pretty practical and turn their hands to most things, of all the thinks folk are likely to try, electronics isn't often one of them.

And whilst helping others 'do electronics' I have seen how it can often be just as difficult to fathom as coding is to me. ;-)

Luckily, I had an interest in electronics from when I was in primary school and along with computers, that personal involvement / interest and especially in 'those days' put me in a reasonably good position re a career. One of my home designed (a good mate did most of the actual chip level design) disco light sequencers was what helped get me one job as a Field Service Tech etc (my Boss to be asked me to bring something I had made with me to the interview).

Being 'local' on selected Fridays and Saturdays was also one of my conditions to accepting the role (to do a disco). ;-)

That suggests then that it is not the triac (the transistor like component, upper right). So either the timer IC or some timing component has failed.

I've read through ss's posts and my understanding is it only works when power is applied to switched-live, and doesn't run at all with permanent live.

That means it could be anything, including the little triac.

Yes even in DIY we have our `favourite` subjects, mine is more mechanical..... clocks, engines, woodwork and the usual home decorating/tiling and just recently acquired a rusted mini lathe which I have restored to working order.
