Diversity applied to a cooker circuit?

Just watching some discussion on a local Facebook group about installing a range cooker. Replacing another cooker. As far as I can tell there is a dedicated circuit. Currys were dubious about the circuit's suitability.



One of the respondents mentioned that Currys probably hadn't applied diversity to their calculations.



My understanding of diversity is that it covers the assumption that not all outlets on a circuit will be in use at the same time.



I would have thought that a Range Cooker should have the circuit sized for the Xmas factor. All ovens, hobs etc. being used flat out to feed the 5,000. So diversity should not apply.



Does this seem reasonable?

The individual rings/ovens/grills will generally temperature cycle individually.

first 10A of largest load, plus 30% of the rest (plus 5A if there's a socket outlet on the cooker switch).

No, because you are ignoring the effects of thermostatic control. Even if you turned up everything to 11, the individual heaters would reach their set point temperatures and, then cycle on and off on their stats.

You might create a short term overload, but that will not bother the MCB or the wiring typically. (it is a prolonged overloads that drive the circuit conductors over 70 deg C that are a problem).

So with a cooker you typically allow 10A of total load plus 30% of remainder. Add additional 5A if cooker point socket is fitted.

So a range that can draw (say) 60A peak, on a dedicated cooker point with no socket would be treated as a diverse load of:

10 + 50 * 0.3 = 25A

However, to **get** to temperature they will all take full power to start with.

If it's on, say, a 32A breaker it might well trip if it tried to take

60A.

However, in reality, one is unlikely to turn everything on, from cold, at exactly the same time. That's what diversity is about.

It's nice to see the term "Diversity" being used in the correct way for a change!

Yup... possibly - although many modern hobs etc will have limiting of max current draw built in.

I was wondering what various ethnic groups and gender versions had to do with cooker power outlets.
