Dishwasher issue

Hi all,



My Bosch dishwasher has developed a fault whereby it starts the cycle for a short while beeps a lot and when I open the door the tap error light is on. This is new to me so don't know the history but was assured it was working fine.



I have checked the obvious



- water is on



- no kinks in pipes



- removed waste pipe from trap and fed it to bowl on the floor



- checked for water in the bottom tray



- checked the float hasn't dislodged and is hitting the flood detection switch



- checked filters



- checked impeller as best I can to ensure free moving and nothing in there



During the bit of the cycle it does I can see



  1. It does pump water out
  2. Water does go in although maybe not enough.

On the rinse cycle I tried adding more water just after it stopped filling (before the beeping started) and that seemed to work. Did the same on a normal wash cycle but it alarms whilst filling. Tried adding water to cover the bottom just after it started filling and no joy.



Only other thing to add is that when I got it the bubble chamber on the side was full of muck so cleaned it out before trying it. The chamber has what looks to be a flow detector built into it (a fan looking thing inside and a tiny electrical connector). Not sure what this does.



Anyone have any ideas?

I had a bosch that did this. I spent £160 on getting it repaired It started doing it again within 6 weeks. I bought a Miele.

I have just replaced the Bosch dishwasher that I bought in 2008. It was used quite intensively, and I never had to call out a repairman.

Thanks. Do you recall what they did to "fix* it albeit temporarily?

Same here. The pump was failing and I deemed it time for a new one.

Replaced a pump I think.

A common problem is that the float switch in the floor level tray which prevents flooding the kitchen sticks and closes the water inlet. Maybe you have checked this, but anyway. TW

Thanks. Yeah checked that as beat I can. When I lift the float I can hear it click so assume that shows it is not clicked on normally.

Poor supply pressure or flow? There might be a filter on the cold water inlet that’s partially clogged (or was that included in your filter cleaning)?

I bought a replacement, but discovered if you dry them out they start working again. They're a abstard to get at and it's easy to break the plastic clip - but it works fine without it.

Hi all,

I have been troubleshooting some more.

  1. Looks like the flow detector is integrated into the bubble chamber on the side. I have checked the connector to it as I removed it when I cleaned the chamber. All fine.
  2. Thought it might be the inlet valve solenoid isn't opening fully. It is part of the inlet hose and can't get at it without destroying the casing. So, I bypassed it with a hose and turned the water on manually when power was sent to the solenoid. Still no joy part way through filling the alarm went off again with the tap light indicating insufficient water. Interestingly the solenoid power was still on indicating more water demand so left for a little bit then turned off the water even though solenoid power was still on so it thinks it needs more water I guess.
  3. I took the float switch off the float in case that was accidentally tripping it. No joy.

I am now at a loss of what else it could be. I think my tests have ruled out..

  1. The flood float tripping it
  2. Inlet hose water flow
  3. Filters both inlet and waste
  4. Connection to the flow switch although can't work out how to test the flow switch is reading correctly?

Anyone have any other ideas?

I hate to say it bu Bosch/Seimens/Neff service and repair is actually quite good. TW

I suspect the cost of the engineer and parts would not be worth it.

I think labour is fixed - but the parts can be pricey.

Essentially repairing anything these days is fraught with expense, even if you can find someone to do the job at all.

DIY or buy replacement is sensible

I am in the throes of fixing my microwave. £80 for a new 1KW magnetron and a quid for the HV fuse it blew. I can get an 800W *new* microwave for £80.

If it wasn't for the fact that I like it, I would.

To do this on a professional basis I'd charge at least £140 if a customer brought it in. Scarcely worth it.

Same with cars, IF I used my car more, and liked the new ones on offer, I'd contract hire the damned thing. For £5000 a year that's about as much as a new luxury car costs in depreciation and servicing anyway.

I admire you determination with that dishwasher. I had a washing machine with a small leak. I couldn't be arsed. bought a new one.

Whilst I'm not an eco warrior but it is a shame that parts are so expensive and we have to resort to a throw away society. Problem is that the next generation will never have the skills to troubleshoot problems, fix them and the sense of achievement.

For the dishwasher the economics are better but I love problem solving and once I get stuck in it is a battle of me Vs it 😄. Also I have learnt a lot about how dishwashers work in the process.

I've learnt more than I ever wanted to know about microwaves in the last

48 hours.

Unbelievably simple brutes. Apply LV to magnetron cathode heater and HV to cathode, and microwaves 'just happen'. Construct some sort of shielded box with a window and a light, and some sort of mechanism to turn the magnetron on and off. Could be mechanical, might feature digital bollox.

I think the majority of people just chuck faulty white goods and electronics in the skip and buy another.

Life is simply too short.

A new microwave or indeed magnetron costs me less than the weekly shop. And the monthly tank of diesel Food is expensive. Microwaves are not.

Well, a Bosch engineer is usually on-hand. IIRC it was £100 flat fee plus parts. In my case it was £140 for a new main board* - pretty much the most expensive component. I had a whinge that the machine was only 2 years old - he phoned Bosch while he was there and they waived the fee for the board.

*the dishwasher is stupidly complicated, with wireless and a load of app-based 'features'. Never again.

That's why I built my own CH controller and oil level monitor - at the end of the day anyone else's was kit that couldn't be fixed and using someone elses cloud. Ive now got PCBS for 'smart' sockets that will (when I've written the code) look like little web serves on the network, that will be capable of being used as timers to start things like washing machines or driers at night, on cheap rate, or by temperature sensing, for top up electrical heaters, or just by manual remote control.

If it goes wrong I can fix it.

So far the main server controller has been 100% reliable . I've had a few issues with the thermometers losing wifi, but they are very simple brutes with no operating system so you have to take care of the 'oh, i cant connect, try ten times then try connecting to the wifi again' s*it.

And when I look at the cost of the likes of Home Hive or whatever its called, I am way cheaper.

I have a fleet of 'smart' sockets, where I've replaced the firmware with Tasmota. The hardware is just an ESP8266 micro, a power measuring chip and a GPIO to a relay. All you need to know is the pinout (which GPIOs go where) and you're in business. For some of them it's possible to reflash without opening the case, which is helpful as you don't need to go near mains, but otherwise the ESP is trivially reflashable once you can get at the pins.

Tasmota gives you a web GUI with controls, SSH, and you can also control them and read power status via MQTT, to report to Home Assistant or whatever server you fancy.

All for a tenner per socket from your favourite river-based online bazaar.

OK you could write your own software if you don't like using someone else's, but it saves the hassle of making your own hardware.
