Why do you need a rectifier as LEDs are diodes anyway? Most white LEDs are 4V so why not just put about 50 in series with a suitable resistor to limit the current?
Because they;d only light on half of the cycle so 50% brightness. Using rectifiers to invert the -ve cycle you get full wave DC so 100% brightness.
because they are bad at rectification and the reverse leakage current detroys them
You also get flashing at twice the rate of half-wave rectification, so less noticeable flicker.
