Different earthing query

I know of somebody who has got hold of some batteries that he has banked as 64v supplies with a device connected that uses an inverter to generate mains with a capacity of 6 amps. It can also keep the batteries charged from the mains. but now he wants to supply the house from it. This strikes me of being a big bang waiting to happen. It would need the house to be totally isolated from the mains when there is a power cut, as the phase and voltages are not going to be the same. Also of course the device is not meant for this use. I also wonder how you would keep the earth, earthed even if you did have a big manual switch. It does make me wonder how many DIY folk, getting thee batteries,maybe a wind generator and some solar cels and an inverter with scant knowledge of how this stuff works will blow all their gear up!Brian
