I have a very old wooden floor I want to lay LVT on. I'm sure the joists have a pronounced bow, etc. If I stick plywood on top and screw it down, it will follow the bow of the joists.
So, how do I pack it so the plywood is nice and level?
All I can think of is to put a thin layer of ply down, then self levelling compound on top of that?
Yup ply then self levelling is the preferred option. Even if the floor is notionally flat you may still see some undulations in the finished flooring...
I did two floors in Karndean planks. One I applied ply and filled all the holes with feathering compound. The other I completely coated in feathering. The latter got a better result. I will just go straight for latex self levelling next time.
Stretch strings from the high points (level with spirit level?) and then use bits of scrap wood to bring the surface up to level in as many places as possible.
Add plywood...
