Hardboard between joists and flooring

Is it OK to add 3mm hardboard between joists and plywood flooring? I have to replace some damaged floarboards I have removed and they seem to be 21mm deep, so adding some 3mm hardboard on top of the joists will mean I can use 18mm ply.

Is the hardboard compressable? Will it suffer from damp?

I've done the same myself, no problems.

But why are you concerned about damp? If it gets wet, then yes, hardboard is horrible stuff, but there shouldn't be any damp between a joist and the floor it supports - if there is, than an uneven floor is the least of your worries!

Yup - that's the common way to pack floorboards.

Since it's basically wood it will have similar properties in this respect.
