Concrete quotation from Tarmac - for general interest (if any)

I have annotated the quote with "** **" where I read something interesting or unusual. My thanks to Tarmac for the quote but it is quite a lot higher than the others I have had for pre-mided and mix on site. A comprehensive list of levys etc. Hope the spacing works for the initial description.

companies like this, and RMC aren't really aimed at the domestic market, IE householders and small buisnesses, they generally deal with large housebuilders, huge construction outfits and such likes - they are at the opposite end of the scale to the mix-on-site outfits, but there are dozens of readimix firms who local builders deal with all the time who don't have ridiculous charges attatched to their T&C's - Tarmac, RMC et al will pour 6 cubes directly into a waiting hole and will be off site within 10 minutes - they don't want to be hanging around for 40 mins per load, which is why they have the charges - to put off people ordering a few cubes for a shed, greenhouse etc. The smaller outfits rely on the lower end of the market and cannot afford to be so picky. My advice would be to ring 3 or 4 readimix firms for prices both with and without barrowing service and pick the one you feel most comfortable with

Thanks - I have two local candidates at the moment. Mix at the site and a mini-mix firm.

The mini-mix is slightly cheaper but I have to talk to them again about barrrowing, how long they can stay on site, and how they cope with a slight over order.

As far as I can see although I hope I can get my measurements to arround 0.1 cubic metre accuracy my spreadsheet tells me that a 3 cubic feet builders barrow equates to 0.08 cubic metres so I am aiming to get the volume to within two barrow loads.

This seems a bit tight, and the one thing I really don't want is to have almost enough concrete.

So for ready mixed I will have to over order then plan to dispose of the extra (if any). This is the main attraction of the mix-on-site; this assumes, of course, that you can trust the operator :-(

one you feel most comfortable with

The people that did my shed base used Mastercrete (IIRC). They arrived and mixed it a barrow at a time (takes them about 30 seconds) The computer on the truck counts all the weights, etc. You can have different cement and water content in each barrow full if you want. I have no idea how much it cost. They had a full truck when they arrived and could have mixed another 50 barrow loads when they left.
