That's why there has been for quite a while a "clear CMOS" jumper. Fully power the machine down, ie unplug the mains, move the jumper, move it back, repower the machine and the boot sequence loads it's defaults back to the CMOS.

In the olden days that jumper was just a way to short the battery supply to the CMOS, and operated just as you describe, at boot the machine can tell from the checksum that the CMOS has been corrupted while it was powered off.

But *if* the settings are in flash, moving the jumper on and off while not powered would have no effect ... which is why I'm sceptical that things have changed to use flash instead of CMOS.

True. But most of the Intel boards I've used in the last few years don't do that, either.

You move the jumper from two pins to another two pins (one is common). Then you repower the machine and get extra facilities to do stuff, including loading defaults. If you leave the jumper off altogether, it will do BIOS recovery from USB/optical/whatever.

Then you power down, reset the jumper and power up again.

Did they have a date on them?

I have some here five in a strip purchased from eBay, proudly marked 'made in japan' and 'for calculator' along the top.

Given the English mistakes printed on the back I've no doubt these are Chinese fakes, best before date 12-2028.

Exactly the same as the dodgy ones I have purchased, including the best before date.
