I don't disagree and normally I have an annual sweep prior to using it again to clear out any sticks that crows have dropped into it.
In theory for the regular usage mine gets I should have it swept every six months but I reckon if I time it right once per year will do fine. I only ever burn good dry wood so it burns hot and clean.
Almost never have a fire before late October or after end of April. Unless the weather turns very severe or Northern Powergrid screw up!
You shouldn't have that much of a smell with one if it is operating correctly. Most of the smell is outside and downwind.
