Changing broadband suppliers OT

Changed to Plusnet recently from EE. It was shockingly simple and an almost seamless switchover, didn't even need to contact EE to cancel.

Got 'cashback' in the form of a prepaid visa card with £75 quid on it

I have just applied to move from Vodafone to Plusnet. 18 month contract and total cost with LRS is slightly less. No counter offer from Vodafone! Whilst I was with Vodafone the exchange was regraded so it is no longer one of the Plusnet expensive ones.

Penalty charges are generally only if you cease the broadband on a line, migrating is ok.

I am being bombarded with vodafone brouadband offers here. I'm with virgin but do use them for mobile. Brian

Right. Maybe I misunderstood the issue. Something about the BB contract and that for the phone not being the same length made changes expensive due to unexpired contract period.

Plusnet are only £1.00/month cheaper and with the uncertain timing of the line/address move it seemed best to go with BT.

Yes PN do give a discount for taking phone and broadband, so I can see there might be an expensive month at the end if they're not coterminus.

I moved from Demon BB plus BT phone to Plusnet for both , maybe 2 to 3 years ago. I don't remember any unexpected charges due to different rental periods.

I have been happy with PN. They sorted the phone efficiently when we had a fault, and they (used to anyway) maintain forums where you can moan. I've had answers from staff there. They also still have a free usenet service, which I find handy when ES goes down.

My son, who needs an efficient service for his work moved from BT to PN and has been very happy with the change.

My thinking was to get the house/line move sorted and then worry about changing suppliers. Sadly this has been delayed and my contract renewal is in March.

Yes, the forums are still working. I have had great service from them and they can be very competitive indeed, but you do have to ask them for the discounts. They are especially keen, if as a good customer you threaten to leave.

I moved from Demon to Plusnet and now coming to end of BT so will be going back to Plusnet. Mechanics of changes not an issue.

To get a decent offer from BT I had to sign up to an 18 month BB contract, but when you sign up you can get 12 months line rental for the price of 11 (Line rental saver).

Now at the end of 12 months you still have 6 months left on the BB contract. You will be invited to sign up to another 12 month contract on the line to get your 12 months for the price of 11 - but this will tie you in until 6 months beyond the end of the BB contract (when prices rocket)

But to be able to get out of the BB contract when it expires you just have to pay the last 6 months of the line rental at the full rate.

I have noticed no difference in speed between BT and Plusnet, the only real advantage of BT for me is their widespread WIFI hotspot coverage.

They're available from all exchanges, but it sounds from your earlier post like your exchange doesn't qualify for the "Market 3" discount.

If you can get BT you can get any other ISP except Virgin cable.

Yes. But you may well pay extra for those that do not qualify for a discount - rural exchanges you often pay more for a worse service :(

It can make the basic BT deal more cost effective if there is nothing by way of LLU in the local exchange. I am actually on EE formerly Orange formerly Wanadoo for the reason that taken together with line rental and mobile phone contract the whole bundle is price competitive.

But if you had them all with different providers and don't threaten to leave from time to time you could end up paying through the nose. Customer loyalty doesn't pay these days.

And every 3yrs the Line Rental and Broadband align.

I've been with BT Broadband a few years now and persuaded them to send me a new HomeHub6 Router as the HomeHub4 was getting on a bit.
