Central Heating Controls

My boiler is set to "On" with the CH controlled by a Honeywell TR3 as recommended by this group, it works very well.



After a particularly cold day recently I woke up feeling cold and with horrendous sinus problems that caused giddiness, annoying but manageable.



After some research I discovered sinus problems can be aggravated by low humidity, I'll omit the gory details!



I also discovered that people can feel colder at the same temperature when the humidity is low because moist air holds warmth (I am not technical but I think that's what it says).



There are boiler controls available that use humidity as a factor in controlling heating, does anybody here use them? If so any comments on how effective they are?



The plan would be to set the temperature at 21 normally but, say, 23 when humidity is low.

Ah, you are into the realms of 'let's design a custom DIY CH system.' My sensors only have thermometers on them...adding humidity would be a laugh...

I do not actually know of any commercially available system that does this

Put its a great Raspberry Pi Pico W project to make the sensors, and use some sort of wifi linked CH controller to drive the boiler and zone valves...

The relative humidity will determine how fast sweat evaporates, therefore how much it will cool you, so in low humidity you will feel slightly cooler.

In your case, it will be evaporation from the moist sinus membranes which is the issue, rather than temperature as such. When it's cold outside, water drops out of the air leaving it at 100% humidity, but when it comes into the house, the relative humidity will drop sharply in the higher temperature.

I'd suspect a humidifier would be a better bet, provided it works on the basis of air humidity, and doesn't just blast water out continuously.

As a cheap test, when the overnight weather forecast is very cold, hang a big damp towel in your bedroom overnight. You will in any case breathe out about 100-150ml of water (per person)* and the extra humidity should help.

There are cheap thermometer/hygrometer gadgets, not amazingly accurate but OK to see variations in humidity from day to day.

  • Damp bedroom walls, with mould growing, are usually the result of very poor ventilation when the room is occupied rather than rising damp.

Much as I hate to say it, Google Home and some IoT kit are game changers in home automation.

For reasons I never worked out (I suspect cost) our original thermostat (with the buried wires to the boiler) is in the warmest spot in the house. (Something I finally proved with a T&H sensor in every room).

The Smart thermostat is now driven by the temperature in the lounge. Which is generally 1C cooler.

During summer I was able to keep the curtains closed if the room temperature went over 25C - which seemed to help a bit.

I managed to snag a set of 10 T&H sensors from AliExpress for £23.

We had a power failure to a BT green box last week, some people lost the Internet for 10 days.

The main complaint was their homes were either boiling hot or freezing cold because their intelligent homes relied on the Internet!

if my CH is down the whole house power is down... No fsking Internet for me.

For a c. 1-4 hour outage I can hotspot a phone to provide household internet. It's not ideal.

So far it would be a manual process. If it was more likely I'd look at a

4/5G USB modem. The problem there (cf UPS batteries) is that the 3 years it spends not being used will mean when it's needed the contract or whatever will have expired.

That is why I like my Drayton Wiser. All the schedules are stored in the controller, you can even edit without external internet if on the same wifi network...

I'm not sure that would help. If you increase the temperature with the same amount of moisture in the air, the RH will go *down* - so you may not still feel any warmer!

Other makes and models are available.

It wouldn't need to, it would just need to tweak the desired temperature.

I find thee same, the 'feels like' temperature, varies quite dramatically, with humidity.
