Car window regulator as winch?

I heard that electric windows are now cheaper to include on a car than manual windows, because the regulator mechanism is sized just right to move the window while a manual mechanism must be oversized to cope with the user yanking it. That suggests the motor is only sized enough to drive the window, and it may not be strong enough to use in a different application.

I think that is completely true. The motors look around 200W. Standard chinoCrap™. Electric windows are cheaper too.

That's a pity. I've never understood the need for them - a winding handle seems to work fine in all conditions, whereas I've owned two cars which developed a fault with an electric window winder, faults which were expensive to repair.

And once, many years ago, a few of us got a lift with our boss and it was a hot day so we all wound our electric windows down, but then the storm arrived and we found that none of the windows would wind up again. We all got rather wet. It was, in fact, a Mercedes that he drove despite their well-known lack of reliability, as I guess he thought that it was an appropriate car for his elevated status.

You dont say anything about how you are going to provide the 12 volt supply to it ?

Being able to open the passenger side window from driving position (ventilation before a/c, pulling up to kerb to ask for directions, ...),

Being able to lock-out rear window opening with children in the back.

(I've not yet had an electric window failure, but both of the winding handles on my Allegro series 3 broke off!)
