buying petrol

bought about £30 worth from asda on 1st August still showing as £99 on my statement...They informed me that the £1 pre charge was changing to £99 or such lower amount that was in your account and the true amount would be charged very rapidly but this doesn't seem to be working...looks like I will be paying cash from now on..... tried to open as dispute but they want to know what the actual purchase price was which I don't know...who does

Complain to your credit card company that it's an unrecognised charge on your account.

The change is due to an increase in fraud. Some people seen to think it is ok to expect the banks / credit card companies/ businesses / ….. to be ripped off and whine when they introduce measures to reduce fraud, the same people probably befriend criminals - convicted fraudsters, sex offenders, …..

Of course, some of us try to ensure they end up where they belong and succeed 😀

How does this reduce fraud? As soon as you insert a card into the pump they have your details to charge you the correct amount. You cannot get petrol at a pay at the pump without inserting the card and pin before the pump becomes active.

My guess - because at the above stage, all it has done is verify that you have an account - there is still no certainty that you have enough or any funds in the account. Charging £99 and allowing up to £99 worth of fuel to be delivered, ensures they will get paid for it if the amount is £99 or less.

I would guess that the biggest problem petrol stations have is the drive off without paying. If you elect to pay in kiosk/shop/till you get the fuel without having to give and financial details in advance.

Be careful, they will try to restrict your dot supply. Then you'll be in trouble.

I suspect we will see the adoption of a pre pay system - it is quite common in the US. Some places will let you fill up if they think you look honest but others you hand over, say, $30 and the pump fills up to that limit. I was surprised on a trip in about 2016 to still see places in the US using signatures and those ‘tracing paper’ credit card receipts. I remember commenting at the time I’d not seen one here for years.

Most Asda petrol stations I’ve used are card only, they don’t have a kiosk.

Their banking has always been behind the times.

Not with cards, they invented those.

Same with ApplePay and GooglePay.
