I have a problem with my central heating today. When the timer starts the Heating or Hot Water it trips the fuse box.
I have a Potterton EP2001 timer. If I press the Advance button on either the CH or HW the light comes on and then there's a 3-4 sec delay and then the 13amp socket fuse blows (it's not 13amp it's the fuse for the downstairs sockets)
Hence I have no heating - luckily I have an emersion too so I have hot water.
Should i be calling a heating engineer or electrician?

A possible suspect is the circulation pump. Can you disconnect that, and see whether you still have the problem? [But don't do it for more than a few seconds - or the boiler will over-heat if the pump isn't running]. Or you could wire the pump into a normal 13A plug and see whether it trips when you plug it in (using an extension lead if necessary).
If it *is* the pump, you'll have to decide whether to DIY it (not too difficult if it has working isolation valves either side) or call a plumber.

Aha! thanks - I have located the pump and it's go a puddle of water underneath it and is dripping. Have put a bucket underneath it - failed pump??

"No, it's buggered, and so will you be when you call the plumber to come and fix it".....
Actually it might just be leaking. Have a look at whether the leak is coming from the shaft area or the connections at either end, or between mating parts of the pump body.
Sounds quite likely - especially if any of the leaking water has got into the electrics.
Why? He's probably got far more chance of getting an answer here.
