I just wanted to put this out there so someone in a similar situation can fix theirs.



I dropped mine from about a meter and a half and it went out. Ordered a new bulb for it as i assumed that would be what had gone but the new one made no difference. I decided to investigate further, and took the bulb back out and freed the plastic tube it sits in from the base by prising out the holding ring and releasing the glue with a screwdriver between the tube and the base. Also needed to pop out and unsolder the connections to the switch so the circuit board would come out. Once out, the fault wasn't immediately obvious, but i found a square inductor seemed very loose. I pulled it and it came off very easily. This inductor has tiny little wire filaments that had become detached from the board in the drop because it hadn't been held in place with a blob of hot glue like it should have been at manufacture. After a bit of fiddling i resoldered the fine wires back into place and glued the inductor back in place. Then put it all back together gluing and soldering as necessary and now i have a (more robust) working inspection lamp again!

Ah the great hidden cost reduction syndrome again. I had a bulb of the low energy type from b/q a few years ago. Got home one day to find it out, well the actual tube was on the floor and the plastic base still in the light fitting. The bulb appeared to only be held in with heat glue and the f wire ends of the tube was simply held in little clips, ie not load bearing connections, so when the undoubtedly low melting point glue had let go it just fell out!
