Bosch SDS

Hello all,

I am given a sds drill that is a little faulty. It is a gbh 2 sr. It cant grip the sds plus bit well. however i am able to use it except that the bit will drop out sometimes.

With a working sds drill, there would be a bearing or piece of metal will grip on the bit when it is being slotted in.

with the one i have, the bearing is not there and i am not sure its lost or not reassembled properly by the previous owner.

is there anywhere i can get info on how to disassemble the drill? the last time i tried on another bosch sds drill, i was stuck halfway.

if its faulty, what part is it that holds the sds bit? is it the bit retaining assembly part 833?

Finally how do i replace it myself?

its a great tool and would be a great to have a work well again thank you.

You need to find out how to load the bit into the chuck. Look for a white spot on the chuck near the jaw. The slot in the bit clips into something along the line that indicates.

You have mail.

For others, somebody ages ago posted this link:

you drill down under "Spare parts" on the left hand menu, you will find pdf diagrams of lots of power tool internals.

One option is to replace the whole chuck - theyre easy enough to remove, and it sounds like the problem is in there somewhere. It's also possible that a bit of lubrication is all that's needed - the bit that holds on retracts to allow the bit in, and it might just not be springing back into place.

Thank for all the info. managed to have it fixed. It was caused by a the catch not engaging onto the bit. Had to reassemble the chuck. Thanks again guys. really appreciate your inputs.

The OP asked for this by email - but posted here for others that need to open up a Bosch SDS (including me, once I've forgotten).

Opening the black half of the body (gearbox & hammer mechanism) on the GBH 2-24:

Remove chuck (interchangable, so just pull sliding collar forward).

Remove side handle.

No need to open the blue part (motor & electrics) of the body at all.

Important part - you must remove the hammer selector switch - this is fiddley. Push the red button right inside the black knob with a screwdriver, the button will now rotate round further than normal. In this new position it can be levered out of the drill body - watch out, the red button and spring will fly out. Look carefully at how it engages - this will be tricky on reassembly.

Next there is a snap ring in the nose of the drill, where the chuck goes, lever it out with 2 screwdrivers.

Now remove the 4 long screws that holds the black cover to the blue body - this will slide off exposing the gearbox. The hammer drive mechanism may stay with either part or fall out on its own. Look carefully at how it should engage with the gears.

Pay very careful attention to how the hammer selector switch engages with the hammer drive mechanism - this was the problem area on my drill.

Reassembly is pretty much the reverse of the above - get the black casing screwed on tight again - then you need to set the hammer drive mechanism to the right position (with a screwdriver through the hole where the hammer selector switch goes) before pushing the switch back onto the body.

Check the switch works properly. You may find you're in for more than one round of disassembly/reassembly until you get that switch just right.
