Yes! Don't get an orbital sander (1/3, 1/4 sheet or whatever) - all they do is gently rub the wood. This does not achieve the desired effect of removing measurable quantities from the surface.
A random orbit sander is what you want. I'm a little evangelical about these at the moment, having only recently discovered them. The Bosch PEX400 is what I have, and it is absolutely superb.
However, if you aren't after a really smooth finish, but just want to remove lota of material, get a belt sander. Crude, gouging, but very effective.
I agree.
Of the various sanders that I have, I use the random orbit one the most (a Metabo SXE 450) followed by a Makita 9404 100mm belt sander and then a Fein Multimaster for small work.
I have an orbital sheet sander but don't use it very much.

I saw Fein drill at one of the wholesalers today. Are Fein tools any good? They're not an Irish firm are they?
However it is a useful tool to have sometimes and the B&Q one at £10 doesn't break the bank. In fact a roll of proper backed AlO paper for it is more expensive.

Yep, I'd rate them pretty highly. Not a popular make over here but they're of a high standard.
Close, German!

I've never seen them until the other day.
Oh well, still off my list then.
Well thought out and made in Germany.
Yes they are good IME.
