My father used to work at a building in Margaret Street (not far from Oxford Circus). I went there in the late 50s, and was surprised to be told once that the outside lift I was on, which carried goods from pavement to basement, was water powered. I think it was converted to electricity some time in the early 60s.
I used to visit The Science Museum in South Kensington many times in the
50s, and was fascinated by the MAR on display there. I'm pretty certain there was a warning about the UV it produced, but can't remember exactly what screening was used. I expect there was a mixture of UVA, UVB, and UVC, with the latter being taken out by the MAR glass envelope.
