AVG continuing annoyance

Yes. But.. I would have to buy it, then learn how to use it. While Microsoft continue to patch the security, W7 does all I need.

Linux is free. Linux Mint Mate behaves almost exactly like windows XP except it doesn't crash. The theory being then you already know how to use it

Well apparently in terms of security, it doesn't.

Install Linux. No more AVG!

You have to determine if you actually need AVG. Do you regularly visit dodgy sites? Do you madly click every spam email?

If no to those, ditch AVG.

If yes to those, you do need anti-malware of some sort, but AVG apparently sucks and gives you a hard time.

Ditch AVG and use malwarebytes or some other.

I can't remember if Tim took the plunge and upgraded from Win7 to Win10?

It appears that the later free versions will also put adverts as pop-ups on your screen and add whitelisted "partner" cookies to your system that CC will not itself remove. You may be able to stop the adverts by preventing CC sending outgoing messages by configuring your firewall but how often CC will try and send the outgoing messages in the background is unknown.

It looks that it is the future policy of Avast, who own CC, to increase these annoying features on all their "free" products to persuade people to buy.

In my experience, a long time ago, the Avast virus cleaner became a virus itself with a new version that spewed random named files in every folder on my machine. Uninstalling the program did not remove these files!

I occasionally use an old version of CC that is installed on my computer but any automatic upgrades and background checking are disabled.

According to his post yesterday, he's happy with Win7

Which is madness when Win10 is available for free to genuine Win7 installs.

To an extent, the current situation is self inflicted in that I got my drivers updated at the cost of inviting a sales campaign.

For some unknown reason my W7pro still gets security updates.

I'm an careful user but still get an occasional alert from Firefox about a dodgy site.

AVG seems to have taken to doing *background* testing while not interfering with other jobs. Slightly annoying as I run it manually at least once per week. However, apart from wearing out my hard drive, doesn't seems to slow the system.

If you are anywhere near Oxford you could bring it to me & I'll show you how to sort it.

Once you get rid of AVG, Microsoft Security Essentials is still available for Windows 7. Others are available. -

There's been some consolidation in the AV industry. As far as I know, all three AV companies whose names begin with "A", are now the same company.

And maybe some people view computers as tools, not fashion items. If it does what one wants, why introduce a new learning curve?

I'm no geek! I would have to get help so *free* is not a huge incentive. My newsreader is unlikely to work without special consideration. Not the end of the world but I have a shoal of *pinned* useful, now historic posts! I have followed Paul's AVG notification suggestion which is ok so far. The solution for C Cleaner is to remove the advanced version and re-load the basic job. I am curious to discover their next move. Only 5 days left:-) so plan to see what happens.
