artex mess

I wonder if anyone can explain a problem I have had with Artex. I had some= artex left over so I thought I'd put it on the ceiling of a walk-in cupboa= rd under the stairs. The ceiling had been previously painted and apart fro= m a few flaky bits that I dealt with, was reasonably sound. I applied a di= lute coat of PVA and a couple of days later applied the Artex. I might as = well have been applying paint stripper!!! The paint just bubbled and came = away from the ceiling making a hell of a mess. I've now used the artex to = strip off all the paint! There is nothing on the pot to warn me that this = might happen. Can anyone suggest how I might treat the ceiling before proc= eeding? Is this a common problem? Thanks to anyone who can help.

I think you need rodders to help with this, it's the only way.

common problem?

I had this with a ceiling that had distemper on and had been subsequently painted with emulsion, which came off in sheets when I tried to paint again. In the end I had to scrape its all back and use Artex Stabilex staibilising solution, and it has been fine since. Zinsser Guardz is the other product I've heard can help.

I thought it sounded like distemper too.

Thanks guys. It is the same problem. I couldn't believe it when it came o= ff in sheets! I think it is lime plaster with some kind of wash on it, pro= bably distemper. I'll go for the stabiliser I think. Many thanks for resp= onding.

Yes, I think it is the same problem. I couldn't believe how it just peeled= off in sheets! The ceiling is lime based plaster with some kind of wash, = probably distemper. I think I'll use the stabiliser. Many thanks for resp= onding.
