I've been investigating an intermittent RCD trip on 120 meters of armoured cable supplying an electric gate. Was it ever acceptable to just lay it on the surface of the ground, albeit at the base of a wire fence in a field? I believe it was installed about 10 years ago. The outer plastic sheath has been gnawed (rabbits?) in numerous places over the entire length exposing the armour, surprisingly a megger test hasn't shown any problems, so investigation continues...

Its never been an ideal installation. The preferred options being either buried, or clipped to something so its away from likely sources of damage (and preferably not a temporary structure)
Mine was fitted to a fence but recent inspection shows most of the nails rusted through and the cable ins mostly on the ground. At present it comes from a spur in the kitchen with fuse removed as it is awaiting a new shed, but I fully expect I might find problems if there are creatures around. Sigh. Brian
What John Rumm says is right.
Rodents seem to be attracted to PVC. It's a good idea to keep them out of your loft for this reason too.
