Apprentice fired

Not a particularly surprising event or outcome.

A spokesman for the garage said: "The lads went on a test drive with the car and they decided to kill two birds with one stone and go and get their dinners.

"When I saw the dashcam footage I pulled the lads into the office and went ape with them.

"The apprentice has been sacked because of his attitude and the mechanic is on a final written warning and he is not allowed to do test drives anymore."

I wonder if the garage owner was more angry that they took the customer's car to get their lunch or that they forgot to unplug the power to the dash cam first.

A garage employee crashed a friend's car while using it for a lunch run and then the garage tried to claim that as he wasn't authorised, it wasn't their fault and that my friend should claim on his insurance! Sensibly, he simply threw it back to them.

Quoting London County Council v Cattermoles (Garages) Ltd, and Century Insurance v NI Road Transport Board, I presume.

The law has the term 'a frolic of his or her own' to describe conduct unrelated to employment.

Whenever our (Motability) vehicle is taken or left for anything, the garage insist the dashcam is removed "for security". Although they never say whose. Be curious how they implement that when dashcams are integral.

"Independent frolic" is what I was told. People have found this with airport parking - significant extra mileage.

I don't think the boss is doing himself an favours with comments like:

"I have offered to do other work for the customer and not charge him for labour, I think he is looking for something for nothing."

"We have built this business up for many years and we are gutted that this has happened through no fault of management but down to individual staff."

Way not to own a problem! Sorry, but if you are the boss, then everything is your fault - be it due to your personal error or that of others because of your lack of leadership, staff training, or simply failing to set appropriate standards of behaviour for your staff.

The phrase "the buck stops here" was coined for a reason.

Maybe they mean 'confidentiality' so that other customers are not recorded without their consent (perhaps having an affair when the car requires a trip to the garage).

I doubt it. It's to prevent the scenario the OP opened with.

Many years ago, when I worked in logistics software, we trialled a black box made by a UK company by fitting it to a directors car. We caught the driver that collected it for a service doing 120 down the M5 to Worcester.

Garage should have played the "Eco" card saying the employee had reduced the garages environmental footprint by only making one journey instead of 2. He didn't appear to be driving recklessly.

Also I don't know if this justified a firing or not, but it seems to me that if anyone it is the mechanic who should have been fired.

The suspicion is that the garage owner is scapegoating the apprentice as this will cause the least disadvantage to himself, a mechanic being harder to replace.

Got a speeding ticket through the post, but was able to show to the reluctant workshop manager that the vehicle was in his care at the time. Was a VW dealership too.

Then why are you 'here' .

First post states that a CAR is involved, I pray to all the Gods that you don't have a driving license.

So why bother with an 'I am not interested' post ?

Brian you are becom> No interest to me its graphic.

Those of us who have poor Internet connections are equally irritated by un-summarised video links. This is supposed to be a text medium, if people want to post idiotic video clips they could at least explain what they are and why they are posting them.
