Aluminium Tape

Does anyone know where to buy aluminium tape? I know screwfix has a

45mmx50m roll for £10, but I only want a small amount.

I had a roll years ago, about 0.5" wide, about 1.5" diameter that cost about

50p. It was nice and thick too. It would be ideal if I had any left.

Thanks

Bob

A cycle shop comes to mind?

Most aly tapes I found with Google tended to be 2-3" wide, no doubt because of their intended use in ducts, flues, gutters, etc.

B&Q's site was singularly useless (searches for tape matched tap everywhere), but I'm sure I bought some from them when I fitted the kitchen

- it was for "heat-proofing" the worktop cutout for the hob. Take care, I got a really nasty cut smoothing down an edge with a thumb...

Try a model shop. That sounds about the right size for the tape that used to be sold for making your own slot-guided electric racing car tracks.

Another thing about aluminum tape to be careful with is in contact with arsenic treated wood. Aluminum and arsenic form arsine gas. Deborah

What an odd comment.

  1. Alumin_i_um in contact with arsenic /can/ form arsine under /some/ conditions.

  1. It's extremely unlikely that this would happen with adhesive backed aluminium tape, firstly because of the tiny concentration of arsenic in the wood, and secondly because of the adhesive layer which prevents direct contact between the aluminium and the wood.

  2. It's very rare (at least in the UK) to use CCA timber indoors, and if it's outdoors the miniscule amounts of arsine generated (if they were generated, which they wouldn't be, see 1. and 2.) would disperse very quickly.

  1. I can't think of a single application where you'd stick aluminium tape on treated timber! I don't even think it would stick.

While I realise that you're running a personal campaign against CCA (through your noccawood site), it's really not on to offer such misleading advice to further your cause. CCA isn't evil. It's a perfectly good wood treatment, but must be treated with respect.

Places that sell polycarb sheets will most likely stock it. I know that C & A Building Plastics sell 10 meter rolls of the stuff for £1.10

for sealing the ends of the sheets to stop dust from getting in.

Thanks everybody. I have a few places to try.

Do they sell the polycarb sheets at UPVC window companies? (They put the polycarb in the roof of conservatories don't they?)

Thanks for the offer, but I managed to get some from a Maplins shop.

I was helped by not the sharpest assistant I ever met:

Me: Do you have any aluminium tape? Assistant: What's that? Me: Its like a roll of tape, made out of aluminium, with a sticky back...

seeing no glimmer of recognition, I had to type into the computer handily sat on maplins website. Once he had a part number, he was OK.
