aldi drywall sander

Hello,

Whilst shopping in aldi I saw a dry wall sander. I only had a quick look but it looks like an orbital sander with dust extraction, similar to the difference between an angle grinder and a wall chaser. Is that a fair description? I'd never heard of them before.

I must admit in days gone by that I have tried to sand walls that I did a terrible job of plastering! Are these any good?

I thought perhaps that the right way to do it is to plaster correctly and not need to sand but the fact that these are made and sold in bulk makes me wonder if I was being over-critical of my plastering abilities? Do most people have to sand walls?

Or is it more that this is for dry walling in the sense of plasterboard that is papered onto without plaster? Is it just for sanding the joins between boards?

Thanks, Stephen.

PS Not sure if this is the exact one I saw, but certainly close:

If your wallpaper onto dry wall that hasn't been 'skimmed' with plaster, you will leave a terrible mess when you try to remove the paper.

My houe downstairs built in 1998 did not have the plasteboard skimmed but had at teat one coat of builders manolia. When swmbo wanted it papered we carefully chose a viny wallpaper. Subsequentlly stripping was easy with no damage. First of all peel off the vinyl layer then soak the thin layer of backing paper left. This could then be peeled off without damaging the surface.
