Aggregate for new drains

Am installing new drains soon using PVC pipes. I understand the pipe has to have 100mm of aggregate below, 150mm to each side and at least 100mm on top. Aggegate to be to BS882 part 2, 10mm typical particles with none greater than 20mm.



The cheapest stuff from our local gravel company is crushed brick/concrete at £8/ton which seems well below this size but the guy there didn't sound convincing that it was okay for the BCO. Is reclaimed crushed material like this OK to use or does the aggregate have to be stone, sand or soil ? Alternatively they do crushed concrete (reclaimed MOT) at £10/tone or MOT (1



1/2 to dust) for £18/ton.

Thanks for any advice as to what to use.

Just order pipe bedding .. (aka 10mm pea gravel)... 150mm to each side is pretty rare in practise.

You should use clean stone pipe bedding for this.

My experience of this stuff is it is pretty rubbishy. It was barely useable to fill some soakaways I'd dug and that's after we'd picked out the complete garbage. A false saving.

I've no experience, but none of your options sounded right, and I'm surprised you can't get new crushed stone cheaper than that around Macclesfield.

My BCO wanted "pea shingle" he has some sort of fetish for the stuff - maybe he owns the local pea shinge quarry - every job can be fixed with "a good bit of pea shingle in there". I used limestone scalpings

20mm to dust - He was fine with that. The crushed concrete I had delivered yesterday (3 inch and down) seems a bit big and lumpy to make the job of getting th pipe "level and fully suppored" easy.

Shingle is best, around the pipe anyway. Further up you can use rubble.

20mm shingle is a good compromise between cost and efficacy. I pay 30 quid a ton for single baged ton at the builders merchants, down to 12 quid a ton delivered in 16-20 ton lots.

Thats the point, use pea shingle round the pipe and cheap crap to backfill above.
