Phones use a single cell, so they're just the alternating electrode plates in plastic film. RC Lipos are multi-celled - you can see the stacked cells from the outside:

and typically can separate the individual cells (it's just tape and shrinkwrap holding them together, plus some welding of the anode/cathode tabs)
Laptop lipos are typically several single-cell pouches laid out, eg:

That means the cycle count on the battery will be a bit lower.

I was removing a failed lipo battery from a Nexus 5X in order to replace it, but it was glued in and burst into flames when it deformed.
Not quite true. When I used a cheap charger and tried to run the phone, there was a loud hum on the audio, which is probably not going to do it a lot of good. I bought a genuine Apple Charger and not only did it work better, but did not kick out radio frequency hash either. You often get what you pay for, however I still think the companies not bundling chargers are shooting themselves in the foot. Brian
