Advice wanted on washing machine bearing replacement

As subject line ... Can anyone give general advice on how to replace the drum bearing of a washing machine? The machine is an antique Hotpoint electronic. As far as I can see, the bearing is mounted in a removable back plate to the static drum. The rotating drum has a spindle through the bearing to a large pulley driven by a belt from the motor.

I'm guessing that the backplate has to be removed because the rotating drum cannot move forward to give access to the bearing.

TIA for any advice

Last time I did the job IIRC you have to drop the drum out of the bottom of the machine.

The brarings should be housed in the backplate, so the backplate and inner drum should come out as one assembly if you release the backplate fixings.

Note there will be a seal between the backplate and outer drum, and this will probably need replacing

Depends on how old it is, is the top of the machine removeable or is it part of the cabinet ?

The top and two sides are a single pressing. The front 'might' be removeable but the easy access is from the rear.
