Can someone explain the purpose of the screw in the body?

Probably so the parts can be assembled.

screw in the middle of the valve is a test point for monitoring correct operation of the check valve.
How you are supposed to do that exactly I have no idea.
Usually to allow the valve itself to be drained - handy when used in locations where you might shut off the supply periodically and can expect freezing. (say a feed to a garden tap)
test point for verifying is working correctly as a *double* check valve
