155mm core drill

Hi,

I need to cut a 155mm hole through my bathroom wall to fit a Vent Axia extractor. I have had a look at the usual places (screwfix etc) and have not seen one with such a large diameter. Anyone know if the tool rental places stock such a beast with a suitable drill I imagine??

Thanks

Roger

IMO rental is by far the best option for large core drills. The largest I own is 45mm. I don't know of a tool hire place that does not rent them out, usually the vastly superior diamond tip drills. They usually insist that you hire their drill gun out for diamond drills though. Most hire stuff is 110v, so don't forget a transformer if you need one.

Go to your local hire shop, not the big boys. I was quoted £35 (from memory) by HSS, but went to local hire shop and got the same animal (in my case 127dia) c/w drill, transformer and extension for £15. This some will do if they know that you are using it for one hole as a DIY exercise.

You'll find it quite expensive to hire; as Colin says, the trouble is you have to hire a boatload of kit to go with the drill bit. Yes, it will (or should!) make a nice neat hole, so you may feel it's worth your while. But it would probably work out cheaper to buy (yes buy) a cheap SDS drill (like Screwfix's 29-quid offering) with a chisel bit and use that instead, providing you don't mind making good the hole afterwards.

and

are a couple of on-line hire places where you'll be able to price this up.

Better to buy a £15 long bit, stitch drill round the perimeter and the innards will fall out easily, and next to no making good.
