Hi, I have a cracked and slightly leaking cast iron soil stack, painted to match the roughcasting, and I am unsure if it would be best to have it repaired, replace the entire stack in cast iron, or consider plastic. The stack has to be around 70 years old. I note other cracks on it but don't see any leakage. The stack also seems to go into the drain and is completely cemented over, is that correct? I am also wondering which type of tradesman, ie roofer, plumber, builder, I would contact to do this type of work? Any advcie greatfully received. Thanks,

You need a Plumber and one that suggests only replacing it with CI. CI is silent compared to very noisy PVC and will outlast PVC. Your CI cracked a minimum of 30-years pre-maturely due to inadequate support, too much weight on it. PVC already failed in my book, I've seen many cracked PVC fittings and pipes from 1-month old to 30-years old. The stuff is plastic and plastic only guarantees to dry-out and crack, always has and always will.
