Send it out to a polishing shop or plater and have it replated. Finding a new part for a 60 or 65 year old fixture is going to be next to impossible.

Worth checking for a local mobility hire shop/garage and see what they can offer. They are likely to use a cost effective product themselves and their price premium may be acceptable.

The Tim Hortons coffee shop chain in Canada built its reputation on fresh coffee. If it's older than half an hour since it was made, it's thrown away. I've seen it happen.
But for MM, the way I'd do it is by hiring a wet carpet cleaner (any tool hire shop). They do a very good job of cleaning carpets.
