A decent cycle shop will sell it by length off a reel. And should have the various nipples etc to do what you need. Bike brakes and gearchanges, etc.

The one at the charity shop where I do a shift is the most bouncy floor I've ever stood on - its horrid and needs ripping up and sorting out.
Far more convenient than finding a Maplin shop, and far less fiddly than your method. MBQ

There's no problems getting the correct thing - just don't expect a shed or hardware shop to stock a near obsolete thread.
Or if it's less than about 5 years old, take it back to the shop and complain. I did that and got about £200 discount on a new cleaner.
Sounds similar but if you have problems finding one go to a tropilcal fish shop. Kevin
