I built a nice building for my wife and now she would like me to add a Cupola for looks. I designed it from the start with a full 24ft ridge vent, 2x8 rafters and attic foil. The foil is amazing and keeps the Attic within a few degrees of the outside air ! The Ridge vent system is plastic and well installed. And I would like to avoid cutting into it. The whole thing works perfectly as it is. Can I install the Cupola over the ridge vent instead of cutting the middle section out ? And if I do, should I close the venting (from inside) that is directly under the cupola or does the cupola just help draw a little more hot air?

I would not block or simply cover the existing ridge vent. A cupola needs its own properly flashed opening, and the ridge vent should be terminated according to the vent manufacturer's details, with the remaining intake and exhaust path kept balanced. If the cupola is…

A cupola needs its own properly flashed opening, and the ridge vent should be terminated according to the vent manufacturer's details, with the remaining intake and exhaust path kept balanced. If the cupola is decorative only, have a roofer detail the curb and flashing so wind-driven rain cannot enter, and avoid cutting or closing the vent until that plan is in hand.
