how to recoil a drain snake

Find a place with hard surface where you can unroll all 75" of it. A long driveway, parking lot, hallway or perhaps a very short cut lawn will do as a last resort - it should not be obstructing the cable. Immobilize the auger somehow (give it so someone to hold steady for example) and make sure the handle can move. Then give it a few (dozen) quick up/down jerks from the far end of the cable so it can wave and swing around as it wants - that will release any twists stored in it and if there were any, you'll see the handle rotate when the twists come out. Once that handle stopped moving, the tension in the cable is now gone and you can just roll it back normally. Let the far end free and turn the handle slowly and evenly - it should find the best way to coil inside by itself.
