I was wondering if it were possible to install a water softener for use only with the washing machine. I don'twant to use it for anything but the washer. I was wondering:
2) How would you go about it? Would I just put it in line with the water lines to the washer? Or is there more to it?

Sure, why not?
How do you put "it" (singular) in line with the water lines (plural)? If you want both hot and cold water to be softened, you need two softeners, (assuming you have only one water heater for the whole house).
Or two water heaters!

I'm not planning on doing this but I wonder if a water softener will work and last with hot water. What brands are rated for hot water (140 F)?
