luckily i was home when the hot water line to my washer blew. so i replaced the line with the metal cased line as well as the cold water line (making a mental note to turn off both water taps when i'm out of town) cold water workes fine but no hot, eventhough the valve is turned on - what gives? could the rubber washer have melted and got jammed in the tap?

Unscrew the hose and see if there is flow from the valve. If there *is*, the inlet screen on the washing machine may be clogged.

Hi,
Clogged screen on the fill valve or bad fill are most common. Unscrew off the fill hose from the washer and try running some water into a bucket to check the shut off tap and new hose.
How to check/test the washing machine....
